Corruption, Secrets and Lies... Oh My Guatemala!

I am always trying to impress on friends and family that once you leave the US borders, anything goes. My fellow 'Guate' families know exactly what I am talking about. The corruption that exists in other countries is utterly undescribable. Here are two examples:
  • December 2007 stolen passport incident. 48 hours of Amazing Race-like hell of trying to get out of the country. Unbeknownst to us that had we bribed the folks at Guatemalan Immigration, it would have been a non-issue. It wasnt until they said, "Hmmm... for 800Q, we can stamp your papers. It doesnt matter that our "records" say you never entered this country, for 800Q we will no longer care and let you leave.
  • Mixco birth certificates... for a few thousand dollars we can get that ready in less than 24 hours. Oh wait... you have no money? That will take six months.
And now the story that would make an excellent movie plot. True story... May 2009 a Guatemalan attorney (Rodrigo Rosenberg) taped himself saying that if he were to be found dead, the President of Guatemala (Alvaro Colom) and his wife were involved. "If you are watching this message", Rosenberg says on the video, "it is because I was assassinated by President Álvaro Colom, with help from Gustavo Alejos (Álvaro Colom's private secretary). You may find this Time magazine article interesting... Time article.

Jump forward to January 2010. Just this past week, it was announced that the UN investigated and their conclusion is that Rosenberg arranged his own death. Hmm! Here is an article with more details... CNN article.

I would love to hear what you all think! Who was responsile for Rodrigo Rosenberg's death?
